Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Legal Director, the Legal Counsel for North America (US and Canada) will spearhead projects to manage and mitigate legal risks and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and standards. The successful individual will need to understand the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, Virogin’s business initiatives and objectives, and provide recommendations and deliverables that align with the company’s mission, vision and goals.

Responsibilities and Work You'll Be a Part of

  • Provides accurate, relevant, and timely advice on a variety of legal topics relating to Virogin’s business in North America (US and Canada).
  • Manages and mitigates legal risks by designing and implementing company policies and procedures in partnership with other departments and key stakeholders including senior leadership, Finance, HR, and global Legal team members.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and administration of legal and regulatory compliance programs to ensure organizational compliance with all applicable laws and standards in Virogin’s North American areas of operation.
  • Promotes legal, compliance and risk management best practice throughout the company.
  • Designs and delivers legal training to the business.
  • Composes, drafts, reviews and edits memos, documents and correspondence of a confidential legal nature.
  • Drafts, reviews, and assists in the negotiation of employment agreements, confidentiality agreements, distribution agreements, license agreements and other legal business documents, as required by the various departments of the organization.
  • Maintains legal, corporate, and other documentation as required by the organization and to ensure compliance with regional and global standards.
  • Supports in the establishment of other entities, intellectual property matters, any litigation, and other legal matters.
  • Stays up-to-date with changes to legislation, particularly in relation to laws, rules and regulations that directly affect Virogin’s business and specific industry.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills you’ll bring to the role

  • Possess a Doctorate of Law / Juris Doctor or other Legal Degree; Master degree would be an asset
  • Qualified as a member of a recognized Law Society in North America
  • 5+ years of relevant legal experience; able to adeptly navigate the current and emerging legal requirements and proactively advise to ensure risk mitigation within Virogin’s North American business regions (Canada – British Columbia; United States – California, Washington State, and other states as the company grows)
  • Excellent professional English communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to effectively and timely translate complicated legal issues to support business decisions
  • Strong interpersonal communication and teamwork; takes a consultative approach
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously, effectively manage time, and deliver results on time
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential/legal information
  • Demonstrated proficiency with legal research
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Working conditions

  • Works remotely and will need to work flexible work hours
  • Flexible on working hours, allowing for partnership across time zones, primarily with Vancouver, BC (Pacific Time) and China (China Standard Time)
